Ready. Set. I’m diving in!
I’ve been receiving countless texts and phone calls from friends lately who are completely discouraged with their fitness journey. (I will always refer to it as a journey because I don’t feel like anyone ever reaches a “destination.” New goals have to be set; quitting will just take you back to the beginning.) As sad as it makes me to hear them so down on themselves, I remember being there myself and try to be realistic with them.
I chose the quote “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” for several reasons. New Year’s resolutions, spring break preparation… there are several times of the year that the gym suddenly fills up then clears out again just as abruptly. Unfortunately, it’s easy to decide that you’re sick of what you see in the mirror. It’s easy to decide that you’re going to make a change in your life. It’s easy to look at pictures of other girls and decide that you will look like that. It’s hard to keep going, it’s hard to get there.
My best advice is to create a routine for yourself and make an actual lifestyle change. You cannot “diet” forever and if you starve yourself of everything you enjoy, you’ll be miserable. Learn to enjoy, even look forward to, your daily exercise. If you hate running, DON’T RUN. If you love lifting weights, DO THAT! I am big on group classes, probably because I am incredibly competitive and love being surrounded by sweaty, hard-working people. I did spin class for a while, tried (and quickly quit) Pure Barre, and now I’m a huge fan of Fight Club (whoops, broke the first rule). I know that I personally love strenuous, hardcore workouts, so that is what I look for. I am constantly trying different classes to see what I enjoy. The trick is not to let your body get used to one type of workout.
If you focus more on how healthy you feel instead of the number on the scale, I promise that you will get lost in your journey (in the best way) and stop fretting over your progress. If you stick to it and work hard, progress WILL come. Like all great things, it takes time. You can’t expect to see your “finished” results in a month. There’s a reason why not everyone looks like that girl you envy. I’ve told you to stay off of the scale, I’ve told you to find a support system. I can tell you a lot of things, but until YOU decided that you are doing this for the right reasons, it will remain hard. Don’t aim to look like someone else that others see as ideal, aim to look like the best version of YOU there is. You got this, girl.
